Favorite Summer Spots in NOVA for Families with Little Ones ☀️🌿

Summer in Northern Virginia can be hot, busy, and sometimes a little overwhelming when you’re trying to figure out what to do with little ones.

So, we put together a list of some of our favorite low-stress, family-friendly summer outings in and around NOVA — from cool indoor play and stroller-friendly nature walks to farmers markets, playgrounds, splash pads, and even a fun day trip.

Whether you’re looking for a quick weekday activity or planning a full Saturday adventure, here are a few spots to add to your summer list!

🎨 1. Beat the Summer Heat at SensePlay Studio

When it’s simply too hot to be outside, head indoors for some hands-on fun at SensePlay Studio in Fairfax, VA.

Our parent-and-me classes combine open-ended sensory play, creative process art, movement, stories, and hands-on exploration designed for little learners.

It’s also a great place to meet other local families and make some mom friends while your little one plays and explores.

🦆 2. Take an Easy Nature Walk at Huntley Meadows Park

Looking for a nature outing that works well with little legs and strollers?

Huntley Meadows Park in Alexandria is one of our favorite spots for an easy outdoor adventure. The boardwalk winds through beautiful wetlands and makes it easy for families to explore nature without committing to a long or difficult hike.

As you walk, keep your eyes open for snakes, turtles, frogs, tadpoles, blue herons, and other wildlife along the way.

It’s a great reminder that you don’t have to go far to give little ones a chance to slow down and observe the natural world around them.

🍕 3. The Easy Weekday Evening Plan: Historic Clifton

Need a simple plan for a summer evening when you don’t feel like cooking? Head to Historic Clifton!

Start with takeout pizza from Clifton Trattoria, then bring it over to the Clifton Town Playground for a picnic and some playtime.

Once everyone has worked up an appetite again, finish the evening with a sweet treat from Peterson’s Ice Cream Depot. Best Chocolate Ice Cream in NOVA — According to My Husband.

Pizza + playground + ice cream = a pretty great weekday evening without much planning required. 🍕🍦

🍉 4. The Ultimate Fairfax Saturday Routine

If you’re looking for an easy Saturday routine close to home, we love this combination in Fairfax City:

Step 1: Start at the Fairfax Farmers Market 🛒
Pick up some fresh seasonal goodies and let the kids explore the sights, sounds, and smells of the market.

Step 2: Cool off at the Fairfax Library 📚
Head inside for some air conditioning, books, and a slower-paced break from the summer heat.

Step 3: Splash and play in Old Town Fairfax 💦
Finish the day with some splash pad fun — and, of course, a scoop from Woody’s Ice Cream!

It’s an easy way to turn a few familiar local spots into a full day of summer fun.

🍓 5. Worth the Short Drive: Butler’s Orchard

If you’re up for a little day trip, Butler’s Orchard in Germantown, Maryland is worth the drive.

It’s one of our favorite pick-your-own farm experiences, especially during the summer when seasonal fruit is ready for picking.

But the fruit isn’t the only reason families love it. Butler’s Orchard also has a huge outdoor farm playground that gives kids plenty of room to climb, run, explore, and burn off some energy.

Fresh fruit + outdoor play + a little adventure? That sounds like a pretty perfect summer day to us. 🍓🌿

🌿 6. Explore Nature at Ellanor C. Lawrence Park

A hidden gem for little nature lovers! 🌳 Explore easy trails, a pond, gardens, and plenty of opportunities to spot birds, turtles, frogs, and butterflies.

Stop by the visitor center for hands-on activities and live animals, then let the kids burn off some energy at the nearby playground.

Why we love it: Nature + animals + play, all in one easy outing!

☀️ Make Your Summer Local

One of the best things about summer in NOVA is that you don’t always need a big vacation or elaborate plans to make special memories.

Sometimes it’s a morning at the farmers market, an afternoon splashing at the playground, a nature walk, or an impromptu ice cream stop.

We hope this list gives you a few new ideas for your next “What should we do today?” moment!

📌 Save this list for later and share it with another local family.
