Best Spring Outings in Northern Virginia with Kids: Beyond Cherry Blossoms

Spring has always been my favorite season—the air feels lighter, colors return, and everything just feels a little more magical. If you’re looking to soak in the beauty of spring with your little ones, here are some of my favorite flower-viewing spots around Northern Virginia that go beyond the usual cherry blossoms.

Whether you’re planning a relaxed stroller walk or a mini adventure with your kids, these locations offer the perfect mix of nature, beauty, and family-friendly exploration.

🌷 Netherlands Carillon

One of the most peaceful (and underrated) spring spots. Watching the tulips bloom while hearing the gentle chime of the bells creates such a calm, almost storybook-like atmosphere. There’s plenty of open space for little ones to wander, and the views overlooking DC make it extra special.

Best for: Open play + scenic views
Mom tip: Bring a blanket and enjoy a slow picnic moment

🌺 U.S. National Arboretum – Azalea Trail

This is truly a hidden gem during peak bloom. The Azalea Trail feels like walking through a painting—every turn bursts with color.

That said, it’s not the most stroller-friendly, so plan accordingly. But if your little ones are up for a bit of exploring, it’s absolutely worth it.

Best for: Immersive flower views + photos
Mom tip: Wear comfy shoes and go early before it gets busy

💜 Bull Run Regional Park – Bluebell Trail

Every April, this nearly 2-mile loop transforms into a dreamy carpet of periwinkle Virginia bluebells. It’s one of those magical, blink-and-you-miss-it spring experiences.

Best for: Nature walks + toddler exploration (watch out for the dinosaur footsteps on the ground for adventurous toddlers)
Mom tip: Great for slightly older toddlers who enjoy walking—some uneven terrain

🌼 Meadowlark Botanical Gardens

The Korean Bell Garden is stunning year-round, but spring truly brings the entire garden to life. From tulips to flowering trees, everything feels bright, cheerful, and full of energy.

Best for: Easy family stroll + variety of blooms
Mom tip: Perfect balance of beauty and accessibility

🌿 Green Spring Gardens

Our go-to spot all year round. It checks all the boxes: a children’s garden, stroller-friendly paths, and a peaceful wooded stream area filled with Virginia bluebells in spring.

The open green spaces are also perfect for letting kids run freely or laying down a picnic blanket. This park is conveniently located near several great Annandale “bunsik” spots—perfect for grabbing takeout to enjoy as a picnic.

Best for: Stroller walks + play + picnics
Mom tip: Ideal for younger toddlers and babies

Spring doesn’t last long—but that’s what makes it so special. These little outings have become some of my favorite memories with my kids: slow walks, tiny discoveries, and lots of “wow” moments along the way.

If you’re local to Northern Virginia, I hope this inspires you to get outside, explore, and enjoy the beauty of the season with your little ones 🌷

If you try any of these spots, I’d love to hear which one becomes your favorite too 💛
