Rainy-Day Activities in Northern Virginia for Kids Under 5
Rainy days with little ones can feel long, especially when everyone needs a change of scenery. But living in Northern Virginia means we have plenty of options for getting out of the house, exploring somewhere new, and making memories—even when the weather doesn't cooperate.
As a family with young children, these are some of our favorite rainy-day outings around NOVA.
1. Indoor Swimming at Cub Run RECenter
One of our favorite ways to spend a rainy day is at Cub Run RECenter in Chantilly. We love the indoor aquatic leisure pool, where the kids can enjoy the water, try the slides, and continue getting comfortable and confident in the pool.
It's a great way to burn some energy without needing to be outside.
Our tip: Check the leisure pool schedule before heading out, since access and features can vary.
2. Sensory Play at SensePlay Studio
Of course, we have to include SensePlay Studio! 😊
Our studio offers sensory play, process art, and hands-on experiences designed for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. Little ones can scoop, pour, squish, explore, and experiment in a welcoming, screen-free environment.
We believe in learning through play and giving children the freedom to explore at their own pace. And on a rainy day, having somewhere to play and make a little mess can be a welcome change of scenery for parents, too!
3. A Library Visit and New Books to Bring Home
Sometimes, the simplest outings are the best.
We love visiting our local library, browsing picture books, and reading together. One of the best parts is checking out books to bring home, so the fun continues throughout the week.
A library visit can also become a lovely little routine: choose some books, settle into a reading corner, and let your child discover a new favorite story.
Check your local library's calendar for storytimes and other children's programs.
4. Smithsonian Museum Adventures
One of the perks of living near Washington, DC, is having access to so many wonderful museums with free general admission.
Some of our family's favorites include:
National Air and Space Museum: Our kids love visiting the observation tower and watching airplanes go by! It's such a simple experience, but one they genuinely enjoy.
National Museum of Natural History: A fun place to explore animals, fossils, and the natural world.
National Museum of American History: Another great museum to explore at your own pace, including the Wegmans Wonderplace, a play-and-learning space designed for young children.
You don't need to see the entire museum in one visit. With little ones, we find it works better to choose one or two things that interest them and let curiosity lead the way.
Our tip: General admission is free, but parking and some special exhibits may cost extra. Check current museum access, reservations, and parking information before your trip.
5. A Little Pet-Store Adventure
This is one of those outings that doesn't require much planning or spending money.
We enjoy visiting pet stores to look at cats and dogs, watch training sessions when available, and observe the fish swimming in their aquariums.
For young children, it's a chance to practice observing animals, noticing movement and colors, asking questions, and learning how to interact respectfully with living creatures.
It can be a surprisingly engaging outing, even if you only stay for a short visit. Just remember to follow store rules and avoid touching animals or tanks unless permitted.
A Rainy-Day Adventure Close to Home
Not every outing needs to be a big event. Sometimes, a short trip somewhere new is enough to reset everyone's mood.
Whether it's a swim, a library visit, a museum adventure, or simply watching fish for a few minutes, these little experiences give children opportunities to explore the world around them.
And honestly? Sometimes the goal isn't to create an extraordinary day. It's just to get everyone out of the house, enjoy a change of scenery, and make a few ordinary memories together.
